Das Macht Uns Nix. Ehrlich.

The first goal Italy scored last night, in late overtime, happened so fast that most of the crowd on Zionskirchstrasse failed to notice. But it was like the shot that killed the President. Why's that Italian player celebrating? Oh God -- All of Berlin fell silent, I think, except for some Italian cafes. Germans in the overflowing restaurants and bars, who had been following the game like a single fan, started behaving like frustrated individuals again, getting in each other's way, kicking empty beer bottles, drifting into the street with useless plastic horns.

Ah, well. The whole German-pride thing was getting scary anyhow. As a consolation prize I offer this link to webcams at Berlin's Olympic Stadium, which you can use on Sunday to watch the crowd as nations with better food sqare off for the title.

oh yeah. i loved it. went to the doenerladen at the corner, before the game started yesterday wearing a brazilian football t-shirt. i hadn't even noticed that, but when i entered the Turkish fastfood thingy it took under ten seconds for a Turkish guy to start blurbflying at me about football (yes: soccer).
well i told him upfront, that football is not really in the center of my interest and that the shirt beloged to my girlfriend...

when the game, which i didn't watch was over later i felt some kind of relief.

now let's see how long it takes until the unusual flagging comes down. by now i had believed, that Germans were among the few people on this planet with a critical awareness against putting up signs of loyalty or pride of their country.

i am a German, but i feel kind of lone now, as i realized that i was probably wrong. okay, it was still fun to see the Turkish majority here in Wedding partying after any success the German team had. they really know how to enjoy such things without getting to serious about the nationalistic side of it. i don't know about the German Germans, though. let's wait and see ,)
