It's Piss Off England Day 2

The right word for the game, I'm afraid, is soccer.

Very good – apart from having a scouser say "innit"

Huh.

Well its neither really if we are picky... here is a crash course for you - something that might come handy in the next few weeks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football

But when the USA win then I think we should call it soccer, at least for a few days. As a guy on radio 5 live said the other day:

"Dear America, please leave our football alone. You win at everything else so please allow the rest of the world at least one decent sport that we can be better at"

Though perhaps a compromise is possible. The US can be the best at soccer and the rest can deny the past and be champions of football.

Deal?

Yes, great idea. But the NFL would sue.

In America, soccer is the sport of the future.

And always will be.

No, the correct word is NOT "soccer"
It was football LONG before some arrogant yank decided to call a game played with HANDS "football".
No matter how much yanks may hop up and down and claim their champions as "world champions" - baseball, yank football whatever else - no one is interested enough to play your silly games apartr from one or two central american countries and Japan.
REAL football is played by everyone BUT yankland.

Whoa. Read the piece, Phil. "Arrogant yanks" didn't call the (now-)American game football -- arrogant Brits did.
