The first wild bear known to wander into Bavaria since about 1835 has been shot dead. It's not as simple and grim as I make it sound, but still. I think everyone feels the loss of Bruno, especially German news editors. There's a condolence blog auf Deutsch.

I was really irked to hear it myself. So he ate some sheep, what's the big deal? All the sheep I've met have been too stupid to live, and bad-tempered to boot.
The headlines in the Bildzeitung this morning are great: apparently poor old Bruno was "gunned down" and his body "secretly" removed from the site of the "murder". And some people have, in return, threatened to kill the hunters involved. So at least we're managing to keep everything in perspective here. Or have the effects of the World Cup and the heat gone to everyone's head?
