Monday, May 08, 2006 Hot Dog BloggingMy neighborhood in Berlin, for some reason, has more than its share of hot dog stands. I realize hot dogs got their start in Germany, and there's no shortage of variations on the venerable wurst-in-broetchen formula; but what explains the apparent craze for American-style hot dogs? A new Radio Free Mike summer series will investigate. Here, to start things off, is a Mister Miller stand on Schoenhauser Allee: ![]() As you can see, Mister Miller is an "American" nostalgia product, with (however) an international menu of French and Mexican-style hot dogs, chili dogs, etc. It's all processed Frankfurter meat. What makes one item French and the other Italian has everything to do with whether you want relish or pepperoncini on the dog. posted by Michael Scott Moore | 7:23 AM

Our little German friend over here always chooses a hot dog when we take her out for a meal. We're vegetarians, so we forget about the existence of hot dogs unless we're out with her. But I thought she liked them because they are a quirky American thing, not because they're a familiar thing from home.
Don't forget to mention the priceless Germenglo phrasal malapropism of Mr. Hotdog's tag line, 'Eat here, Diet home'...which almost means what they want it to when you see it in print, but sounds like something hilariously other when you read it aloud.
