Tuesday, March 28, 2006 The Lonesome Death of Rachel Corrie... is the name of a spanking-new Billy Bragg song about the American woman who died under an Israeli bulldozer in 2003. I'm linking to it because, of course, it's based on a Dylan song, "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll." Here's an impressively dumb review of a show at the Somerville Theater last week (near Boston), where Bragg played it: "... a solemn new song," writes Linda Laban, "more of a free-form poem at this stage, called 'My Name is Rachel Corrie.'"Man. If you're going to review Billy Bragg for the Boston Globe, YOU BETTER FUCKING KNOW A DYLAN SONG WHEN YOU HEAR ONE. It's just barely possible that Bragg didn't sing it to the tune of "Hattie Carroll" in Somerville, but if you read the description of how "Rachel Corrie" came about on the Guardian page (above), you'll doubt it as much as I do. "My Name is Rachel Corrie" is the title of a play that just (re-)opened in London and almost got performed in Manhattan, before the New York Theater Workshop changed its mind. Interesting controversy. None of us around here feels moved to holler "censorship of Rachel's writing" the way Billy does in his song; but we'll be following the matter here at Radio Free Mike. This is horrible...just horrible...
It's so horrible...well, it's just in the worst taste. But over beers one night a group of us were throwing out lines about how Evergreen State College (who graduated both Matt Groenig and Rachel Corrie) produced them both. The only college that produces grads who specialize in two dimensions? It got worse. Bad. Very bad. But part of that wanting to laugh a little about it comes from her kooky parents.
Parents? No, I was laughing because Corrie was protecting terrorists and died under a bulldozer and then all of her frinends said she was more important dead and now everyone is so sad. I mean, her friends wanted her dead, that should tell you a bit about Corries chosen path.
Which friends wanted her dead? And how come everyone's so sure there was an arms-smuggling tunnel under the house she wanted to defend? The research I've done -- which I admit isn't much so far -- says there was probably no tunnel. (Here's a link. I've read the noisy counter-opinion on Front Page and it's more obnoxious than compelling.)
Tunnel or not, though, Corrie should have been arrested, not killed. She wasn't exactly standing in the middle of a firefight.
Michael, All of Corries ISM friends said that a dead Corrrie was better than a live Corrie because her death could be used a symbol against Israel. If you think I am making this up, than you really haven't looked very hard.
As far as the tunnels go, I am not sure why you would simply assume that Israel is lying. Unless of course, your assumption is that Jews are liars.
How did we get to anti-Semitism so quickly on this thread? If you keep it up I'll ask my readers whether I think "all Jews are liars."
I think all governments, in this situation -- including America's under any president -- would lie to save their bureaucratic skins. As for the ISM friends saying a dead Corrie is better than a live one, that's an ugly crass thing that Billy Bragg even mentions in his song. But it's not the same as saying they "wanted" her dead -- before she died -- and it certainly doesn't answer my point about why Corrie was "pancaked" rather than arrested.
Corrie was pancaked because her friends were snipers who fire at Israelis, so Israel can't have spotters help the bulldozer crews, and the bulldozers are forded to use protective shielding, which reduces vision. So, Corrie entered an illegal zone, her friends fired illegal weapons, and she was killed because she chose death by bulldozer. Funny, if the Palestinians just stopped killing then they would stop dying.
Come and check out my collection of Rachel Corrie jokes. http://whypalestiniansgetitwrong.blogspot.com/2006/04/rachel-corrie-jokes-come-and-get-em-i_01.html
Here's a picture of the woman you keep making pancake jokes about, after the bulldozer broke her spine.
I still haven't made up my mind about the play in London -- I haven't seen it yet -- but I do think you're an idiot. The problem with Ms. Corrie is that she's been turned into a political poker chip. You can say the terrorists who champion her have dehumanized her, but dehumanizing her back won't help. A play might, though. I'll get back to you.
Dehumainzing Corrie? Corrie spent her days and nights protecting suicide killers. She stripped herself of all humanity without any help from others.
No, in fact, since "humanity" involves foolishness and evil as well as all sorts of good things, she couldn't strip herself of it. But people who like to wage flame wars can.
As someone who felt ashamed to admit what I did about joking about it over beers, I'm firmly in Mike's camp on this one that there's no reason to flmae her over sticking up for what she believed was right. The organization she was doing it for is a little sketchy, I'll admit, but we've found a lot of other ways to get people out of the way from a bulldozer than running over them with it.
e
Corrie chose death by bulldozer. Corrie chose to support terrorsim. Corrie chose to aid in the killing of Jewish children. Corrie chose friends who publicly admit to wanting her dead to help their cause. Corrie made bad decisions her whole life. Making jokes about it is nothing compared to her eagenress to kill Jewish children.
Yes I am back....

...RC and CS. For me two cases with the same argument. Why bother? Both nutcases but there are others who talk and do this crap, who chose this madness without excuse - lets focus on them, for example the singer. The sad thing is for me the political death of an otherwise sound musician. Look forward to his next gig in Berlin. Probably sold out. Well done Billy, you penis! Welcome to the anti-Semitic International! "ThE PrOBLeM iS ThE JoooooooooooooooooooooS!" could be your next song I guess. @wpugiw Please grow up. |
