Babelsberg!

For a new daily paper in Cambridge, Massachusetts I'm writing a column from Berlin called Babelsberg. That's one reason I haven't been blogging so much. I'll try to post each column on the front page a week after it appears on the street in Massachusetts, to keep from scooping my own editor -- but no promises. If you live in Cambridge, pick up your own damn copy of Cambridge Day.

As for why the column's called Babelsberg, you'll just have to wait for the third or fourth column to explain these little mysteries, won't you? Yes, I'm afraid so.

Babelsberg is "famous" for two things.

1. Their great soccer team.
2. The DDR filmstudios.

OK on reflection the first isnt very famous at all and the second would probably count as "infamous".... no I am stumped *suspense*

Just checked the first column out... nicht schlecht. You dug up a good one. I hope this is only in English so that I can impress my German friends with my extensive knowledge of advertising monopolies from the past.

My column's only in English. But that Litfass book is in German. Oh, and — Babelsberg has a football team?

Yes and a crazy collection of fans:

The "DDR filmstudios" had their hayday in the Weimarer Republik, e.g. when Marlene Dietrich starred in various films made there, when the owners were the UFA. In my opinion a lot of the DEFA stuff topped this - but internationally the UFA stuff is probably better known.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding.
