He is Risen

Detail from a lush and atmospheric cemetery in Prenzlauer Berg. The St.-Marien-Nikolai churchyard sits north of the Platz am Koenigstor, or King's Gate Plaza, which means that back in the day it would have been built just outside the city wall. The place is full of family mausoleums like this one, heavy with the Catholic pomp of death. Berlin's answer to Pere Lachaise? But no rock stars.

Eh, rock stars are overrated, and once you have them in your cemetery, there goes the neighborhood.

Anyway, there's some question about whether some of the better-known inhabitants of PL actually are. Maybe Moliere's actually in your place, fr'example.

Hello everyone.... back from my 4 week holiday. Hear the weather in Berlin has been shite.

Too right Indri, the cemetery visit in Paris was the most over rated experience i have had i think. JM is buried there and every depressed stage teenager in the world seemed to be converging there... I felt very out of place and "uncool" for daring to look for graves of people who did more than write strange lyrics, jerk off on stage and take vast ammounts of drugs. Not that I dont like listening to the Doors now and again but some of the tourists there were OTT, some even armed with Jack Daniels, candles, rugs etc... I got out of there asap.

Andy, my point exactly. Fortunately the day I was there, there were no adherents to the cult of the Lizard King in evidence... but the damage they'd done on the way to his grave was visible.

Who were looking for, and did you find them? I found my dead people, by and large.

I know exactly where Proust is buried. And Oscar Wilde. I could find "Moliere" again, maybe.

This photo makes me long for a high-pressure hose. Even if that would wash away some of the charm.

Well as graveyards go it is impressive, a lot of amazing stuff there famous or not, especially the steppy bits above the circle bit- if you see what i mean.

I was running through the lonely planet list that Mike has mentioned but went in the wrong entrance where there wasnt a plan seller and got a bit lost. Some assholes seemed to have written "Sex drugs and R&R" or the like on loads of graves.

In the end we just wondered round and didnt see very much. Bought some cheap wine in a supermarket on the way back and ran into a pro democracy for Iran demo with about 50 police vans per person demonstrating.

BTW I popped into the Cafe of Old Europe tonight about 10.30 but I didnt see any sort of Stammtisch scenario happening. Is this becoming a long standing joke at my expense Mr Moore?

Welcome back, Andy.

We were there! Only about four of us, though. I swear this isn't a joke.

10.30 Maybe it's more Fruhschoppen than Stammtisch. Quit joking with him, he gives good conversation.

Hi Desyl, thanks. If you had been there then I would have recognised everyone but you werent. I was only there for a second anyway to say hi as I was passing through on an important mission to save the world!
