Bear!

I came across this a few months ago utterly by accident, riding my bike around by the Maerkisches Museum. I swung into Koellnische Park, and suddenly three yards away was a great man-eating animal in a sort of well-appointed pit. Sure, they're a city symbol; but I wonder if Berlin's the only world capital with public bears?

I bet China's got a public panda somewhere, but I have to run and can't look it up.

Is there just the one bear in this enclosure?

funny i just posted on the berlin bears last week! there are three of them: schnute, tilo and maxi.

Ah, I just read your post. I haven't been to bear-feeding time yet.

Doesn't Bern have a bear pit somewhere in the city, too? (for the same reason as Berlin does).

"Bern" there, done that.

Not sure if they still do, though? And I don't have time to look it up at the moment.

off topic...

Interesting article, BTW, on Berlin's Jewish memorials. No direct links, but it's www.seattletimes.com and you just have to dig a little for it.
