Just before the Pope died, a German archbishop appeared on TV as part of a litany of "color" interviews with church eminences. But he managed to say something wise: "Wanting to hold onto the Pope now is just egotism." Jawohl! The same, of course, went for Terri Schiavo. I can respect honest grief and public homage; but both vigils had a cultish dimension of clinging to a personality who was obviously on the way out. In the end that's idolatry: the opposite of religion.
