Just to Top Off the YearTen meters, in theory, is a surfable wave, but in the Indian Ocean it was also enough to submerge some of the Maldives and pile the bodies of surprised sunbathers on the shores of Sumatra, Indonesia, where Acehnese rebels have put their civil war on hold, "saying [they] did not want to add to the chaos and confusion."
UPDATE: The Asia Foundation has a philanthropic site called Give2Asia, which just set up a tsunami fund. I know a few people from the Asia Foundation in Jakarta; it's a solid organization. And of course there's always the Red Cross.
